Sharing Dreams/Compartiendo Sueños 2008:
Design in Music/Diseño en la Música

Music like art has no dialect. It is a universal language. It can be understood by anyone anywhere. I believe this is one of the most important foundations for sharing dreams, to bridge the gap between two countries that have one common goal of communication but seem to be worlds apart.

It’s a very important thing to keep a dialogue open between two countries that are so vastly different, especially in this day and age where although technology seems to be making the world a smaller place, people seem to be drifting further apart by petty differences. In designing this poster, artistically I drew inspiration from the clean style edgy posters of OSPAAAL, I always loved these posters because their main focus was possessing the power of ideas and messages and used their artistic abilities as a vehicle to drive the message.

When I started to design this poster, I listened to a song called “Novia Primera” (First Girlfriend) written by Carlos Galindo and sung by Yamil Días. The poem in the song spoke about the poet’s childhood, which made me think about the back and forth conversation between the songs harmony and the music that pours out of the guitar. It’s as if they were having a conversation with one always answering the other. I wanted to depict this childlike love that exist in the song, so I decided to create the shapes in a very childlike manner which was important in expressing the essence of that first true love and how you feel at that moment. I also referenced the headstock of the guitar to be the head of the boy and girl because I wanted it to feel like a child when they are drawing, they have no limits to their imagination.

I hope people feel like this when viewing the poster, because it is the intention of the artist to remind you of that happy time in your like when everything was that simple, and there were no worries but when you were going to eat and who you were going to play with next.
