John DeMao, Jr., Secretary

John DeMao, Associate Dean for VCUArts-Qatar, has a design background in information analysis/organization, publication planning/production and design methodology. He earned his MPD from North Carolina State University School of Design. John works with local, regional, and national clients, his experience includes private sector, public, and academic projects in both design and administrative capacities. He has lectured nationally, and internationally, including a series of three lectures, “Nuevos dispenos para nuevas tendencias,” at the Universidad de Palermo in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as a participant at the 5th European League of Independent Art Schools Conference in Helsinki, Finland, and the ICOGRADA Education Network conference in Brighton, England. He is a coauthor of Working with Type: Exhibitions, with Robert Carter and Sandy Wheeler. He has also been involved in the development of the design curriculum for the VCU School of the Arts in Qatar since its inception.

John was Chair of the Communication Arts and Design Department at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1987 to 2003. He was also responsible for developing and coordinating the activities of the department’s Center for Design Studies which published ZED, A Journal of Design, the academic journal, Design Education in Progress: Process and Methodology, and co-produced with the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Loop: AIGA Journal of Interaction Design Education.
